Since 1992, the United Nations has supported International Disability Day, also known as the International Day of People with Disabilities. International Disability Day seeks to increase awareness of the rights, dignity, and welfare of people with disabilities while also promoting a better understanding of those who are affected by a disability.
In addition, spread knowledge about the advantages of including people with disabilities in all spheres of life, including the political, social, and cultural ones. International Disability Day encompasses all known disabilities, from Autism to Down syndrome to Multiple Sclerosis, and is not just focused on mental or physical impairments.
We should all consider how we might build an inclusive society that meets the needs of everyone on International Disability Day. Did you know that 15% of people worldwide experience some sort of disability?
This represents over a billion people! That is a significant sum. Even though we have made significant progress in terms of accessibility and making sure that people with disabilities can lead as fulfilling a life as possible, more needs to be done. On this day, we are urged to consider how we can build a community that is welcoming to all.
