Logic always takes a back seat when it comes to sci-fis
Interstellar is directed by Christopher Nolan. It is set in a dystopian future (2067) where humanity is at the brink of extinction. Blights and dust storms don’t let any food crop grow except corn.
The conflict in this story is humanity’s struggle between survival and extinction.
Cooper is a former NASA pilot. He gets a binary code through dust patterns in Murphy’s (daughter) room. Through this he able to find a NASA facility which is trying to find planets fit for habitation. 12 astronauts have been sent to far off planets to collect data for a team that will arrive later. John Brand the head of operations explains to Cooper that he’s trying to find ways to take the humans still alive on Earth but for that he requires to finish a formula to propel settlements into space. Until then Cooper and his team will have to take 5000 frozen human embryos and find a habitable planet with help of the data collected.
Miller’s planet, an ocean world is unhabitable, Cooper and Dr Amelia Brand almost drown. Doyle dies by a gigantic wave Two alternatives remain; Edmund’s planet and Mann’s planet. Amelia loves Edmund but Cooper says that they have to go to Mann’s due to positive data.
Cooper breakdowns while seeing a message from Murphy that she has reached his age now due to difference in the flow of time in space and Earth. When John Brand dies, he tells everyone that the formula can’t be finished. Upon reaching Mann’s planet, the data sent by him was false. In the end, Mann is killed and we see Cooper reaching into a 4th dimension through the black hole, he goes back in time and sends Murphy a message in a watch. From this message the present age Murphy is able to finish the formula and save humanity. In the end, we see Murphy in old age and Cooper still an adult. Amelia has gone to Edmund’s planet and its habitable.
Through this sci-fi tale Nolan tries to showcase how in the race for humanity’s survival, logic wasn’t the answer but love and family was.
