It is very normal to abhor contamination, dirt or germs. Of course, it's not something one would like but having an irrational fear to a greater degree becomes a phobia.
This type of phobia is called Mysophobia.
"The phobia is often linked to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but people who don't have OCD can also have it. The phobia is believed to be fairly common and can affect people from all walks of life."
As it is often related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, it is imperative to understand that OCD obsessions are entirely different from Mysophobia.
Although similarities exist, then again, it is not the same.
Like, one of the most common things between Mysophobia and OCD is frequently washing hands.
However, the thoughts vary in both cases.
People with OCD are compelled to relieve the distress they experience as a result of the non-completion of the act itself. In contrast, people with Mysophobia are compelled to complete the act specifically to remove germs. The difference is subtle, and many people experience both conditions, so it is important to see a mental health professional for an accurate diagnosis.
