It’s three games without a win for Arsenal, with two of these games in the league.
Ordinarily eyebrows may not have been raised, after all, after such a phenomenal first half of the season, what’s five dropped points? Arsenal still have a six point cushion after all?
Manchester City have however created a situation where nothing less than perfection feels good enough to win the title. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that the champions go the rest of the campaign without defeat, and achieving upwards of 45 points across their remaining 17 games does not feel unrealistic.
Arsenal face Guardiola’s side in their next fixture and it does feel make or break. Arsenal had a lucky escape last weekend and preserved their 5 point and 1 game lead. Should Unai Emery fail to help his former side out in tomorrows visit to the Etihad, the gap will be just 3 points heading into Wednesdays clash.
Whilst Arsenal will still have a game in hand, the psychological edge that leapfrogging Arsenal will give Manchester City is huge. No matter what, Arsenal must not lose this game,
On the other hand, Manchester City aren’t in top form, either. An Arsenal win under the Emirates lights would see them go 6 points clear with a game in hand, even if Manchester City win tomorrow. The confidence boost and safety net this would give Arteta’s men could be what is needed to push them over the finish line. It would create a situation where Arsenal’s blip is out of the way, injured players are on their way to fitness and Arsenal can afford to lose at the Etihad provided they don’t drop too many other points.
Arsenal are at a seasonal low point. Confidence is down, and Manchester City are breathing down their necks.
Now is not the time to give up. It is still City who are playing catch up, and there is a long way to go. Things change quickly in football, and a win on Wednesday could leave Arsenal back on top of the world again.
Let’s keep fighting.
