From the time Virat Kohli resigned in all three formats, numerous skippers (as we speak six) have taken over, Rohit Sharma being the prominent one. Reason for change in captaincy was not just one, injuries, busy schedules, fitness concerns are to name a few. KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, this year, got their chances to be the captains and lead India in various formats. It is comfortable to say that uncertainty in the captaincy area has impacted the Indian team.
The year 2022 was one of the years that no Indian cricket fans would want to remember. Despite being the origin country of IPL, and producing the best t20 players, we still could not make into the finals of either T20 Asia Cup 2022 or the most awaited T20 World Cup 2022. Team performance this year has raised questions on many players. Be it Rohit Sharma being a captain or KL Rahul being a vice captain. Poor performances again raised questions on change in captaincy. However, former Indian player, Irrfan Pathan, thinks that instead of changing the captain again and again, the team should focus on their approach towards the game. In one of his tweets he mentioned:
“Indian cricket going forward 1) Openers playing freely, At least one of them. 2) Wrist spinner (wicket taker) is must. 3) Tear away fast bowler. 4) please don't think changing captaincy will give us changed result. It's the approach what needs to change."
Bowlers have really been a major concern this year. We still lack bowlers with the ability to get important wickets in every match. With the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, the bowling line-up is lost. Bhuvneshwar Kumar as death bowler has proved to be a disappointment. He is a good wicket taking bowler with a new ball, but he failed to deliver in the overs where it was utmost required. Arshdeep Singh, no doubt is one of the most promising bowlers but let us face the fact that he is still new to world class cricket, and he will take some time to fill his shortcomings.
