While addressing Arshdeep Singh, Akash Chopra said, “He is Work in Progress” and we agree. Shardul Thakur is a middle over bowler, he really needs to explore other segments as soon as possible. This year Yuzvendra Chahal did not get much to serve, especially in the T20 World Cup, we wished that he could have got some overs to bowl.
As we speak about the openers, it was a dull year for KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma. R Sharma is one of the best batsmen in the Indian team. He has proved his skills numerous times and in various tournaments, be it world cup or IPL or bi-lateral series. The only area of improvement for him is the knock-out rounds. He has the most records under his name but if we see the stats for the finals and semi-final matches, we can see this is still a concern. The sad tale of not scoring much in finals and semifinals started in the 2014 WT20 semi-final match, where he scored 24 runs in 13 balls. Run rate was good and he could change that to another 50 or even 100 (Looking at his potential). This poor performance in the last matches kept on going even till now in the 2022 T20 WC semi final where he scored just 27 runs in 28 balls. The 2019 year, which was Rohit’s year, even though he could not score in the semi-finals with just 1 run in 4 balls.
These can be some improvement areas where it will benefit team India in crucial matches.
It’s been just over a year since Rohit Sharma took over the responsibility as a captain and he has very less time to prove his talent. As he stepped in the captaincy shoes, he was bombarded with Asia Cup and World Cup. It will be unfair to judge Rohit’s captaincy so soon. Instead, the team should focus on its bowling line-ups and attacks. If India focuses on these improvements in batting and bowling, there are more chances of winning important matches rather than just focusing on changing the captain.
