If you want to get picked as a test player, play well in the IPL!

As now selecting a white-ball performer -- especially one that sets the IPL alight for red-ball cricket has become a norm.

No surprise as players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, a player that’s played just four red-ball games in his domestic seasons gets picked for the West Indies tests whilst those that grind it out in Ranji Trophy, season after season, are left on the sidelines.

Gaikwad was also in team India's squad for the Asian Games, and now is playing the India vs Australia T20i series.

IPL has dramatically changed cricket's ecosystem and with it the mindset of players.

There’s no doubting Gaikwad’s talent and ability. The two-time IPL winner with Chennai Super Kings has been quite impressive in his short career so far. He is neither hurried with genuine pace nor at sea against swing and seam; quality spin doesn’t trouble him either. There is no reason to believe that he won’t succeed at the test match level. But what of his unavailability during the domestic red ball seasons, what does that tell you about the batter’s commitment towards the longest format of the game?

There are players like Sarfaraz Khan, who has scored 928, 982, and 556 runs in the last three Ranji seasons, was not considered for the Indian Test team.

Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar had also criticised the selection committee for not picking up Khan despite his brilliant performance.

But players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad got their first call on the back of their performances in the IPL.
