Not every food group is fit to be eaten raw – not everyone is suited for those purposes despite the principles of the paleo diet which advocates relying on foods the way the first men did. One might think that cooking and exposing them to heat can mitigate the nutritional value of meals – however, foods like flour, eggs, and cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli must NEVER be eaten raw. But what about complex carbohydrates like oats? Some people blend raw oats into smoothies or grind them into flour or make them overnight or make oat balls – but is it wise to eat them raw? Read on to find out.
Oats are available in several forms but one of the most common varieties of it is rolled oats. As per the FDA, they are made from dehulled, clean oat groats cut, steamed, rolled, and flaked. These, because they are cut into smaller pieces, can be cooked easily. Experts say that steaming oats can be a good way of minimising the risk of pathogenic microorganisms thereby making it safe for raw consumption. Therefore, overnight oats or recipes using rolled or instant oats are safe to eat.
Are raw oats safe for people with digestive problems ?
People who have digestive distress or have a weak digestive system are likely to experience bloating, gas, constipation, abdominal pain, and more, eating raw oats, even the safe ones, can be distressful. Therefore, before eating raw oat, it is advised to go slow, drink lots of fluids and gradually increase the exposure to them over time.
When it comes to overnight oats, one needs to be mindful yet again about their storage. Despite being safe for intake, it is advised to refrigerate them properly as moist environments are where bacteria can thrive and grow – therefore, avoid leaving them on the countertop at night.
