There was much excitement in Chelsea at the beginning of the year when the Blues struck a deal with Atletico Madrid to sign Joao Felix on loan until the end of the season. The Portuguese forward has struggled since his move to Spain in 2019 and was rumoured to have fallen out with Diego Simione. Still, his move to the Blues represented a chance for him to redeem himself and show the quality he did at Benfica that made him the best under-21 player in the world.
However, his move to Chelsea has been far from the dream move that fans and the player had hoped for. He had an impressive debut against Fulham before being sent off for a double-footed tackle after the hour mark. He scored on his return at West Ham and has only scored a goal since then despite starting 10 league games since his move to the capital.
While it’s easy to get distracted with a few tricks and flicks Felix has not improved the Chelsea attack as he was brought to do with the Blues attacking output only reducing since his arrival. The Blues have scored only 10 league goals since January and haven’t scored in their last four games in the League.
Felix can be seen as one of the culprits with his 2 goals the only contribution he’s made since January. He hasn't provided any assists or created any big chances and averages 0.7 key passes per game. This, compared to Mason Mount who has provided two assists and scored thrice, averaged 1.3 key passes per game and created three big chances makes the decision to bench the Englishman questionable.
Joao Felix seems to have only contributed to the problems in the Chelsea attack rather provide the solution, he looks like he does something without doing anything and it’s only a matter of time before this comes to light and the Chelsea board decide against making the loan a permanent one.
