Our current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is often heard criticizing Jawaharlal Nehru, Rahul Gandhi, and Congress but in criticizing Gandhi and Nehru, it’s hardly seen PM Modi criticizing the former Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi as much.
Why is that, or is our dearest Prime Minister find relatability between him and Mrs. Indira Gandhi, or they both are the two sides of the same coin?
Since Prime Minister Modi came into power in 2014, there has been a sense of centralised and personalized power play in politics in the country, and PM critics often refer to his terms as an “undeclared emergency.”
When former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, was in power she abused her position and declared a state of emergency in 1975 in India. During the period of emergency, there was unrest and chaos in the country, and in recent years the country saw many similar situations.
Gandhi made sure that her ideology was heard, used her position well, and used her ideas and imposed them on citizens. During her tenure as PM, there were maximum amendments brought to the law and constitution.
She made sure and strengthened the centre at the cost of federalism, curtailing the freedoms of citizens.
However, the Modi government since its time in office from May 2014 has passed 76 bills through the ordinance route till 2021. There have been many bills passed in Parliament, without any discussion. Many decisions, including demonetisation, etc., were taken first by the prime Minister and his inner circle and only then shared with the cabinet and legislature, ensuring the opposition’s proposed no-confidence motion could not be taken up.
The position of the press has also been curtailed during the tenure of both Indira Gandhi and Narendra Modi.
When Gandhi declared the Emergency, curtailing citizens’ fundamental rights and limiting the freedom of the press. Students’ political rights were severely curtailed and a reign of terror was unleashed on campuses by her government in the mid-1970s.
In recent years too, the Media and fundamental rights of the people have been compromised too.
