Some studies have suggested that with years, depression and weight are linked and they indicate a bidirectional relationship. In other words, depression could lead to weight gain and weight gain could lead to depression.
As per 2020 systematic review, the relationship between weight gain and depression is unclear. The authors have noted that with the years it have:
• It has shown a relationship between two conditions.
• There is no found agreement about the meaning of the association.
• It shows an inconsistency in the onset of both conditions.
An observation that's shared from an earlier 2010 study that stated people with obesity had a 55% higher chance of developing depression in their lifetime. People with depression are 58% likely to develop pbesity than those people who does not have depression.
Many reputable organizations like National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) , notes that weight gain or weight changes are possible complications of depression. For some people weight changes could mean weight loss instead of gain.
