Is this the Beginning of the End for Test Cricket?
Test cricket is widely considered the pinnacle of the sport. However, some series and tournaments often remind us that Test cricket is in a very sad state in some countries.
South Africa is currently playing a Test series against New Zealand. However, there's another domestic tournament is going on in South Africa - the SAT20. As disappointing as it might be, it is evident that South Africa players have prioritized the SAT20 over the Test series. With most players opting out of the series, South Africa has to field a very inexperienced team against New Zealand, with 6 players making their debuts in the first Test. New Zealand, quite expectedly went on to win the game by 281 runs.
It is evident that Test cricket is in a very sad state in South Africa, with most players relying on domestic T20 Leagues for big paychecks. South African Test coach Shukri Conrad saying, "If SA20 doesn't happen, we are not going to have Test cricket anyway".
Cricket fans will hope that the South African management finds a way to ensure financial stability alongside prioritising international cricket.
