Israeli Forces Injure UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon
Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon have resulted in injuries to two members of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The incidents occurred when Israeli tanks fired on UNIFIL positions, including a guard tower at their headquarters in Naqoura. While the injuries were reported as non-serious, the situation has raised significant concerns among international observers.
UNIFIL reported that Israeli soldiers targeted various UN positions, damaging essential facilities and monitoring equipment. The spokesperson for UNIFIL, Andrea Tenenti, described the attacks as serious violations of international humanitarian law and called for clarification from Israeli authorities.
The Israeli military has not commented on the incidents but is currently engaged in an extensive offensive against Hezbollah, which has also been active in the region. Hezbollah claimed to have struck an Israeli tank in response to ongoing hostilities.
International reactions have included strong condemnations from both Italy and France, with officials demanding accountability and adherence to the safety of peacekeeping forces. UNIFIL, comprising around 10,500 personnel, has been deployed in Lebanon since 1978, aiming to maintain peace and security along the border.
As tensions escalate, UNIFIL continues to advocate for a ceasefire and the protection of its personnel, emphasizing the need for all parties to respect international obligations regarding peacekeeping operations.
