Following a successful start to 2024 with two major missions, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing for the launch of INSAT-3DS satellites using the Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F14). Initially planned for January, the launch is now expected in the first week of February. The mission, in collaboration with the India Meteorological Organisation, aims to enhance climate services with a series of climate observatory satellites.
This launch will mark the return of the GSLV, which uses cryogenic liquid propellants, providing higher lift-off weight capacity compared to the solid fuel-powered PSLV. ISRO's Chairman, S Somanath, revealed plans for at least 12 launches in 2024, emphasizing a busy year for the space agency. Upcoming activities also include tests for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight project and the launch of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) collaboration, scheduled for March.
