Shocking
Delhi's historic Masjid-i-Jehan-Numa, aka Jama Masjid, one of India's largest mosque, issued a notice for prohibiting the entry of solitary women or women in groups in the mosque premises,on Thursday 24th.
The notice was retracted later that day, after the intervention of Lieutenant Governor into the matter.
The notice was put at the entrance of the mosque, which stated that women were allowed only when accompanied with husband, a male family member or visiting with the intention of offering prayers.
The religious body took the decision on the pretext of blaming women for making irrelevant social media content(Photos, Videos, Reels), while disregarding when the same acts were also done by men in the mosque premises.
Moreover, blaming a particular gender clearly showcases a deep rooted patriarchal and sexist mindset. Especially since the Prophet (Peace be upon him) has always accorded equal position to men and women in the society.
DCW chief, Swathi Maliwal also intervened into the matter, and said, stopping women from entering in Jama Masjid is wrong, as a man has the right to worship, so also a woman.
Also, she wrote to the Jama Masjid's administration seeking a proper explanation regarding such an arbitrary decision.
This news report came out at a time when muslim women are fighting for their rights all around the world and now the arbitrary action taken by Jama Masjid will raise a lot of questions on muslim women rights in India as well.
A time where women continue to fight for their rights and freedom, this attempt has been made to crackdown on the very same.
However, the 13th Imam, Ahmed Bukhari agreed to revoke the order as of now after conferring with the Lieutenant Governor, but with a request to declare that the visitors must respect and maintain the sanctity of the mosque.
Though the notice may be retracted, the mindset will remain intact.
