John Mulaney's Baby J (2023)
A Review of the Comedy Special as Available on Netflix
John Mulaney is a man wearing a suit on a mission to make people laugh. After a 5 year hiatus during which he himself had dealt with severe personal issues, he's back with a vengeance and he's more hilarious than ever. This stint of John Mulaney was one that wasn't devoid of humour but which was a cathartic episode for him, where he extolls his struggles with drugs and how he overcame the same. At the same time, the struggle and its value is clearly visible on John's face, which makes the audience appreciate his humourous take on it even more.
John doesn't fall short on taking bites at his own fallacies and how they gravely impacted the people around him. He details his struggles, his acknowledgement of his addiction, his road to recovery whilst also showcasing how his addiction began impacting his everyday life, citing the example of an interview he gave whilst he was high, with absolutely random answers to an equally bewildered interviewer. But despite his humorous take on his journey to sobriety, never does he downplay what happened to him or to others who might have had similar experiences, something that's quite refreshing. Thus, as a huge John Mulaney fan and a poignantly happy individual who advocates for mental health, this is one comedy special I'll definitely recommend as a watch.
