Kathal- A Jackfruit Mystery (2023)
A Review of the Movie as Seen on Netflix
Kathal, is essentially is the story of Mahima Basor, played by Sanya Malhotra, who's called upon by her seniors to investigate a case in which high-end Uncle Kong Jackfruits are stolen from an MLA's home, and need to be found before they get ready to eat. How these are found or not, and the culprits of the entire fiasco, form the basic premise of the story. The story is loosely inspired by the police investigation into the lost cattle of the brother of the BJP MLA, done by Bareilly police, done at an unprecedented pace.
The story in essence is a commentary on the government system as well as prevalence of casteism into everyday life. The comments about Mahima being a Basor woman, a Scheduled Caste woman, rather than her qualifications that result in her getting promotions or the fact that someone literally remarks to her face that scheduled castes are "inherently and born thieves" are some hard hitting dialogues.
Sanya Malhotra gives a stellar performance, complimented by the wonderful selection of scripts that she absolutely nails and excels at. The supporting cast in the form of Anant Joshi, Neha Saraf, Rajpal Yadav, Vijay Raaz, Brijendra Kala and others also give great performances to add glitter to the movie.
If sarcastically brilliant movies, that provide a social commentary with accurate comic timing and drama jn just the right amount of flair, this a must-watch. If not, watch it for the fun ride it takes you on because it's absolutely hilarious when it wants to be and serious when it should be.
Recommend or not: Absolutely recommend
