A child's foot, in intancy, is primarily made up of cartilage. as they get older the bones ossify (form) and the growth plates close. unconfined movement of the foot during these developmental years is crucial for healthy development of the foot.
If we restrict the movement of a child's foot with rigid, narrow footwear in the developmental years it *will* impact the function of the foot as they get older and we pave the path for lifelong foot issues like bunions, plantar fasciitis, fallen arches, metatarsalgia etc. Most kids are born with perfect feet. True anatomical abnormalities are rare. but if we constrict them in narrow toe boxes and use artificial arch support for 30+ years, we will have foot problems.
when looking at summer footwear for your kids, remember this 'barefoot' criteria;
1 Wide toe box to allow for ample space for toes to splay.
2 Thin soles for better sensory feedback and ground-feel.
3 Flat soles from heel to toe - No raised heel and no toe spring.
4 Flexible in all directions to allow for healthy foot movement.
