Shri S. Somanath took the role of Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, Space Commission on January 14, 2022.
With a career spanning several key positions, he boasts expertise in launch vehicle technology. Notably, he directed the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC).
During his tenure, he contributed significantly to the development of PSLV and GSLV Mk-III launch vehicles, focusing on architecture, propulsion, structural design, and integration.
He was pivotal in the successful GSLV Mk-III D1 flight, the Chandrayaan-2 lander craft engines, and electric propulsion systems for GSAT-9.
As Director of VSSC, he oversaw milestones such as Crew Escape System demonstrations and the GSLV Mk-III M1/Chandrayaan-2 launch.
He also led developments crucial for the Gaganyaan mission and the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV).
Somanath holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering, is a fellow of prominent engineering societies, and actively contributes to international space organizations, making him a distinguished figure in India's space endeavours.
