Liverpool's LGBT+ fans group, Kop Outs, has expressed its concern and disappointment over the potential move of club captain Jordan Henderson to Saudi Arabia side Al Ettifaq.
Reports suggest that Henderson is considering a lucrative offer from the Saudi team, managed by Steven Gerrard, and the move has raised questions due to Saudi Arabia's human rights record.
Kop Outs, appreciative of Henderson's support for their group and LGBT+ issues as a Rainbow Laces ambassador, issued a statement on Twitter expressing their appall and concern. They highlighted the oppression faced by women and LGBT+ people in Saudi Arabia and criticised the concept of "sportswashing," referring to using sports to distract from human rights issues.
The group also criticised Gerrard's potential involvement in the move, considering his previous support for Robbie Rogers, a former LA Galaxy teammate who came out as gay in 2013. They called on Henderson to stay true to the values of the club and urged him to consider the implications of joining a club in Saudi Arabia.
However, it is important to note that Liverpool has not received an approach from Al Ettifaq, and Henderson still has two years remaining on his contract. Any potential move would likely involve a significant transfer fee.
Liverpool's midfield has undergone changes this summer, with the departure of James Milner and the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. While Henderson may face reduced playing time, he is still seen as an experienced player and an integral part of the club.
Former teammate Jamie Carragher acknowledged that the financial aspect of the potential move is difficult to turn down but also noted that Henderson may face criticism for his decision, considering his previous support for LGBT+ issues.
