Shree Bhai Mohan Singh was a giant of the Indian pharmaceutical industry , bought Ranbaxy from his cousin Ranjit Singh and Gurbax Singh Founder, on August 1 , 1952 , for Rs 2.5 lakh. In the 1970s, India adopted the process patents regime. Bhai Mohan Singh realised that, through this route, he could make any drug and sell it in India. He set up an R&D facility to reverse engineer products. His blockbuster products included Calmpose, Roscillin and Cifran, among others.

In the late 1960s with the launch of his super brand, Calmpose he made his mark in the pharmaceutical industry. In the early 1970s when India adopted a system of process patents, Bhai Mohan Singh quickly realized the possibility of manufacturing any product in the world through reverse engineering. Thus, he established an R&D facility at Mohali. By the year 1973, Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. became a recognized brand in India.
