Shree Desh Bandhu Gupta was an Indian Billionaire , philanthropist , entrepreneur and the founder of Lupin Limited . He started his career as an associate professor at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Rajasthan. He quit teaching and decided to become an entrepreneur and founded Lupin in 1968 with a capital of Rs. 5,000, borrowed from his wife. Now, Lupin Limited is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company based in Mumbai with a presence over 100 countries. It is one of the largest generic pharmaceutical companies by revenue globally.

Lupin pharma used to supply iron and folic acid tablets to the Government of India programmes related to mother and child healthcare programmes. Later, Lupin started manufacturing anti TB drugs, which formed 36% of the company sales. And it was considered the largest TB drugs manufacturer in the world. After success with Lupin, in 1988, Gupta founded the SR arm of the group, the Lupin Human Welfare & Research Foundation (LHWRF).
