Late Shree Uttambhai Nathalal Mehta was a businessman who Founded Torrent Pharmaceuticals . Hailing from a small village in Palanpur district, he started his career as a government servant and later worked as client on work as a medical representative for pharmaceutical company Sandoz. In 1959, he founded Trinity Laboratories with an investment of Rs 25,000. He manufactured medicines for the treatment of mental diseases at reasonable prices. He went on to manufacture speciality drugs and founded Torrent Laboratories in 1976.

For India, it was a big leap at a time when only multinational companies manufactured speciality drugs; it was Shree Mehta who went on to establish Torrent Laboratories. The company began marketing several useful drugs at very competitive prices and soon got established in the Indian market. Today, Torrent is a large company engaged in the business of pharmaceutical goods and power generation.

Shree Mehta brought to market many low cost and specialized medicines, especially for mental ailments, for the Indian public. Besides, U. N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre (UNMICRC) in Gujarat is named after him. Apart from Hospital Infrastructure development,Torrent's Patient Care Initiative Programme at UNMICRC has resulted in effective service delivery and better hospital management. The treatment is rendered to all patients, particularly the economically disadvantaged.
