The legislators attempting to ban transgender girls in high school from participating in sports in alignment with their gender haven’t been able to provide evidence to backup their reasoning, Associated Press reports.
This year, bills in at least 25 states are attempting to stop trans youth from fully participating in sports, violating rights under Title IX, a law protecting people from "discrimination based on sex in education programs.”
Some of these lawmakers don’t know of any transgender atheletes in their states, but claim that by banning trans youth, they’re trying to prevent possible problems for non-trans women.
But excluding trans girls and trans femme children from participating in sports has negative outcomes for trans and non-trans women: “It invites gender policing that could subject any woman to invasive tests or accusations of being ‘too masculine’ or ‘too good’ at their sport to be a ‘real’ woman,” according to ACLU.
And contrary to popular belief, “biological sex” is an inaccurate term and trans athletes don’t have the unfair advantage that these bills refer to.
“A person’s genetic make-up and internal and external reproductive anatomy are not useful indicators of athletic performance,” according to Dr. Joshua D. Safer, Staff Physician, Endocrinology Division, Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The ability to participate fully in school is critical for student-wellbeing and 56% of LGBTQ team members report feeling a positive sense of belonging in school, according to GLSEN, which researches policies designed to protect LGBTQ+ students.
