Let me tell you this. Dance is not an exercise. It is something that helps us understand what is inside us that is divine, and reveal that to ourselves. It is a journey to a higher place, a higher plane. Yes, dance has postures, rhythm, technique, knowledge and a passion within. Coming from Japan, doing movements is very natural to me.
That said, learning Bharatanatyam is not an easy proposition. It is a long process and as I had written about it earlier, one life is not enough for learning this dance. But it is both rewarding and enriching. It enriches your soul and makes you feel rich within.
I have such a spiritual and intimate relationship with dance and often I fail to explain what it is. I can’t think of living without dancing.
If I stop dancing who I am. I don’t have an answer. I dance therefore I am. This is how I see it. If I don’t dance? Then It’s not me, Yoka. Well, I do western dance. I teach myself dance aerobic dance. It is a good way to remain flexible, build stamina, and stretch your entire body.
