Despite his immense talent, Scholes was often overlooked for individual awards during his career, with his selfless approach to the game and focus on team success meaning that he never sought personal glory. However, he was recognized as a true legend of the game by his peers, and was named in the UEFA Team of the Year on three occasions.
Scholes retired from professional football in 2011, having played 718 times for Manchester United and scoring 155 goals. He was persuaded to come out of retirement for the 2012/13 season when his brilliance was needed, and played a further 33 games for the club before finally hanging up his boots for good.
Since retiring from playing, Scholes has become a respected pundit and commentator, offering his insights and analysis on the game to fans around the world.
He has also taken up coaching, and has worked as an assistant manager at both Oldham Athletic and Salford City, where he is part of the "Class of 92" ownership group that also includes Beckham, Giggs, Neville, and his brother Phil Scholes.
