Xabi Alonso is a name that is synonymous with world-class football. The former Spanish international midfielder was widely regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation, known for his passing range, technical ability and composure on the ball.
Throughout his career, Alonso has won numerous domestic and international titles with some of the biggest clubs in the world, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players of his time.
Born in Tolosa, Spain, in 1981, Alonso grew up in a footballing family. His father, Periko Alonso, was a professional footballer who played for several Spanish clubs, while his older brother Mikel also went on to become a professional footballer. It was no surprise then, that Xabi took up football at a young age and began playing for Antiguoko.
At the age of 16, Alonso joined Real Sociedad's youth academy, where he made his professional debut in 1999. He quickly established himself as a regular in the team and helped Sociedad finish second in La Liga in the 2002-03 season. Alonso's impressive performances in midfield earned him a move to Liverpool in 2004.
During his five-year spell at Anfield, Alonso established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. He formed a formidable partnership with Steven Gerrard and helped Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League in his debut season.
His stunning long-range effort in the final against AC Milan will always be remembered as one of the greatest goals in the competition's history. Alonso's passing range and vision were key to Liverpool's success during his time at the club.
He was the creative force in midfield, picking out teammates with pinpoint accuracy and setting up countless goals. He was also a regular scorer, netting 19 goals in 210 appearances for Liverpool.
