Macron Calls for Arms Ban on Israel Amid Escalating Conflict
French President Emmanuel Macron has urged a halt to arms deliveries to Israel, which has been intensifying its military operations in Gaza and recently expanded its assault into Lebanon. In an interview with France Inter, Macron emphasized the need to prioritize a political solution to the ongoing conflict and criticized Israel's actions, warning that they risk further regional escalation.
While France is not a major supplier of arms to Israel, Macron's position as a key EU member and permanent UN Security Council member gives his call significant weight in international discussions. He condemned the humanitarian toll of Israel's strikes in Gaza, stating, “We are not being heard. I think it is a mistake, including for the security of Israel.”
Macron also voiced concern over Israeli ground operations in Lebanon, stating that "the Lebanese people must not in turn be sacrificed." His remarks drew a swift rebuke from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who labeled them a "disgrace" and called for solidarity with Israel against what he termed "the forces of barbarism."
Netanyahu’s response highlighted a growing divide between Israel and some Western leaders. Macron's comments are seen as a message not only to Israel but also to the United States, which remains the largest arms supplier to Israel.
As Macron seeks to play a mediating role in the region, his call for an arms embargo has garnered support from other nations, including Qatar and Jordan, which have echoed the need for consequences regarding Israel's actions.
