Manchester United keeper Andre Onana has been named in the 27-man Cameroon side who will be competing in the African Cup of Nations.
This news comes just over a year after Onana had decided to retire from International Football after he sent back home amid the tournament following a frosty relationship with Samuel Eto'o, who is the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot).
While he has indeed been called up for the tournament, whether Onana wants to participate or no is an entirely different point of conversation altogether. Sources in and around the player believe that he still has a certain level of uncertainty, and that he is yet to make a decision about the matter.
Manchester United have been vocal around the topic of his participation, saying that the player will have the full support of the club in whatever decision he takes, and that they are in constant dialogue with Cameroon for the same.
While FIFA are very stringent when it comes to international call-ups to players, with the directive stating that the player will have to "Respond Affirmatively" as per the RSTP, Onana's current predicament falls outside the purview of this regulation in the sense that he has received a call up from his country despite previously making it known to the association explicitly of his intention to not play any further.
With the tournament running from 13 January to February 11 2024, Onana will be in line to miss the Premier League games against Spurs, West Ham, Wolves, and Aston Villa, should he choose to participate in the tournament. He will also be unlikely to take part in United's FA Cup tie vs Wigan on January 8th as well. That will further extend to the next round of the tournament provided both United and Cameroon qualify in their respective tournaments.
Onana's absence means that Turkish keeper Altay Bayindir, signed from Fenerbahçe will be in line to make his competitive debut for the club. United believe that he has enough quality and skill to offset the former's absence.
Onana has made 27 appearances for the Red Devils this season, keeping 7 clean sheets.
