In their opening Group G match of the AFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament Round 1 against the Kyrgyz Republic, the Indian women's football team got off to a fast start. Anju Tamang scored twice in the first half of the game, and Soumya Guguloth, Shilky Devi, and Renu each added one to give India a 6-0 victory on Tuesday at the Dolen Omurzakov Stadium in Bishkek.
Thomas Dennerby's Thomas Dennerby-coached Indian team got the game underway quickly and scored their first goal in the sixth minute. Anju Tamang pounced on the rebound of a free-kick that was saved and headed the ball into the goal from close range after earlier hitting the crossbar.
The first goal calmed the Indian team, and they continued to control possession and generate numerous scoring opportunities. On the other hand, the Kyrgyz Republic team defended heavily while attempting to catch India on the counterattack.
India persisted in advancing despite the best efforts of the hosts, and in the 41st minute they doubled their lead. Once more on point, Anju Tamang headed in a cross from Soumya Guguloth.
India's third goal was scored just before halftime by Soumya Guguloth, who used a strong shot from inside the box to find the back of the net.
The Indian team carried on where they left off and continued to control the game in the second half. In the 61st minute, Shilky Devi scored India's fourth goal, and two minutes later, Renu scored their fifth.
The Indian team continued to play with assurance and control after they had already effectively won the match. With a late goal, Renu gave the Indian team the winning margin, icing on the cake.
A draw or narrow loss against the Kyrgyz Republic in their next match on April 7 (Friday) would be enough to guarantee India's spot in round 2 of the AFC Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers. The Indian team will be hoping to maintain its form and continue its pursuit of Olympic qualification in the following round.
