Maybe this country isn't for women! There is no justification of inspite of these wrestlers protesting for months, they end up having a WFI President like Sanjay Singh who is a close associate of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Sanjay Singh's election as the new president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is certainly is like a hope crashing for many!
After his election, Sakshi Malik, the only Indian woman to have won an Olympic medal, might have tearfully announced her retirement from the sport.
And there must be many to come!
But then there was someone better as the WFI President, an athlete herself but she wasn't chosen.
She lost to Sanjay Singh, and that's former Commonwealth Games gold medalist Anita Sheoran, she spoke The Indian Express on what the election results mean for women wrestlers, why their voices have been crushed.
Anita Sheoran thinks it's like a losing battle, she said, "Some of India's biggest wrestlers had raised issues against the former WFI president related to sexual harassment and safety of women but even for them it seems to be a losing battle. I don't think any regular sportsperson who wants to bring real change can even dream of being part of a federation now. Despite the issue being a serious one about women safety, the WFI today does not have even one woman member. I was at the elections yesterday (Thursday) and after seeing the environment created and behaviour of people from Brij Bhushan's camp I don't think they will ever allow any wrestler with independent views to be part of the federation. They want to keep wrestlers as far as possible from the federation."
