MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup: Army draws with defending champion Indian Railways; Tamil Nadu scripts its first win after beating Maharashtra.
A last-gasp goal by Jobanpreet Singh ensured Indian Army drew 2-2 with defending champion Indian Railways in a Pool-A contest of the 95th MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup All-India hockey tournament held here on Saturday.
Earlier, in another Pool-A tie, host Tamil Nadu scripted a convincing 4-1 victory over Maharashtra for its first win while in a Pool-B match, former champion IOC eked out a 3-2 win over Karnataka.
Railways looked aggressive in the first quarter with the team looking like a well-oiled unit. Army, too, was up to the task. Though not as flashy as its opponent, Army remained competitive with its in-the-trenches approach.
Trailing 1-2, Army equalised with a peach of a goal by Jobanpreet, who made a short and quick run from inside the circle to flick it home.
It was a morale-boosting victory for Tamil Nadu, and it came against a side that just the other day, upset former champion BPCL with a come-from-behind win.
