When cisgender actors are cast as transgender characters, it upholds the harmful ideas that trans people aren’t who we say we are, and the trailer of Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui plays into that, while reinforcing toxic masculinity.
Trans people aren’t deceiving anyone by being who they are. Media misrepresentation often casts a lens of ‘deception’ in being trans, which has real life consequences that disproportionately impact trans women and femme folks at interacting marginalized identities through hate crimes and fatal violence projected by cis-het men through their insecurities.
This year, at least 44 trans and gender non-conforming have been violently killed in the United States, most of whom are Black and Latinx transgender women.
