Meet Tulsa, a Dalit cook in Chitrakoot district who has been a working mom for over a decade.
A single mom, she has raised her son with the help of the women in her life. After the death of her mother, Tulsa stepped out of her home for the first time to look for work. Since then, her life has revolved around work - in the house, in the care of her child, and outside the home to, as they say, bring home the bacon. When we spoke to Tulsa on the occasion of mother's day, her replies were tinged with frustration and tiredness. Where is the time for leisure, she asked. What fun can I have or give in a monthly salary of mere 2000 rupees? Is there more to life than work? Do single mothers have robust support systems?
