The abrupt downfall of Liverpool this season is certainly a bombshell to many, but the icing on the cake is the ill-fated decline in the productivity of their star man Mohammed Salah.
The Egyptian King has struggled to find the back of the net this season. This is evident in the fact that there is an 18-goal gap between him and Erling Haaland who spearheads the scoreboard in the league.
While some have attributed Salah’s devastating form to the international heartbreak suffered with Egypt as the country missed out on clinching the AFCON title and a World Cup place to Senegal, many have also laid claim to Liverpool’s new frontline and a transitioning midfield department.
Admittedly, Jürgen Klopp has said that Salah and the club as a whole are missed a ‘well drilled machine’ up front. A statement which implies a remembrance of the workaholic Sadio Mane who departed the club for Bayern Munich during the summer.
The attacking trident of Salah, Mane and Firmino have dominated the football landscape in the English league having contributed a total sum of 338 goals across four seasons. Mane was very vital to the success the trio achieved as his energetic character engendered fluidity, pace and unity in Liverpool's attack.
In his absentia, Liverpool have purchased a copious number of forward players but none of these attacking talents have filled the vacuum Mane’s absence created. In addition to Firmino’s recurrent injury problem, the new frontline are yet to build a telepathic understanding which have severed Salah’s stint this campaign.
Also, Liverpool have been hit by an injury-plagued midfield this season. Filled with overage players, klopp has been forced to pair a host of run-of-the-mill players to fill the midfield section in many occasions. This has gravely led to their shortcomings as they are in 10th place.
The midfield is not playing to Salah's strength, topsy-turbines have characterized their attack in the absence of a ‘well-drilled machine. The combined effect of these has accounted for why the forward is struggling to find his best form in the ongoing season.
