Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami played the entire ODI World Cup 2023 in pain as per his former Bengal teammate.

Shami had a magical performance in the World Cup as he picked up 24 wickets in seven games with a career-best seven-wicket haul against New Zealand in the semi-final.

But since the loss in the final of the tournament, Mohammed Shami hasn't suited up for the Men in Blue with his injury. The West Bengal speedster was largely missed in Team India's recent inning and 32-run loss against South Africa where the fast bowlers failed to utilise the seaming conditions and went on to concede 408 runs in the first innings.

Talking about the recent Arjuna Award winner, a former Bengal teammate of Shami revealed to PTI that the Gujarat Titans star regularly took injections and played the entire tournament through pain. He also shared that the Indian speedster has a chronic left heel issue which he suffered through the World Cup and is currently dealing with.

Shami's former teammate, on the condition of anonymity, said, "Shami has a chronic left heel issue. A lot of people don't know that he took injections regularly during World Cup and played the entire tournament through pain. But you must understand that as you grow older, recovery from each niggle or big injury takes that more time."
