Most of us know about Medusa, the Gorgon in Greek mythology. Many popular movies have portrayed her as a villainous character, also glorifying Persues for beheading her. But do we know the real story? Medusa was a priestess in the temple of Athena. It is said that Poseidon the god of sea was enamored by her and raped her when she didn't return his advances. Now what did Athena do? There are several versions of this story. Some theories say that Athena cursed Medusa to become a gorgon with eyes that could turn anyone into stone because she was angry at her for losing her virginity. Some say that it was blessing so that Medusa could protect herself from such vicious men. Some theories claim that Athena was jealous of Medusa's beauty and decided to curse her instead of confronting Poseidon. Well I would like to think that Athena did that to help Medusa but it's hard to believe that she would turn the poor victim into a vicious monster to help her. Athena could have given her any other blessing that would have protected Medusa rather than turning her into a monster. No matter what the real story is Medusa is not the actual monster in the story, she is a victim who had no real support from anyone maybe not even from the goddess she worshipped. What are your thoughts about the theories? Which story do you believe? Are there any other insights about this story? Do let me know!!
