If one chooses to remain at home and age gracefully, one must make the necessary lifestyle adjustments and establish adequate emergency medical care and support arrangements for daily needs as one ages.
A word of caution both Nidhi and Adarsh Narahari offer is that continued good health is uncertain and can change suddenly, and support services when you urgently need them can be very unreliable and costly.
My Dilemma
My discussions with Narahari and the senior care facilities I saw on visits abroad made me consider senior community living as a desirable option. Two of my sisters -in-law also think so and we decided to find a suitable place where we all can invest and move in after a few years. The criteria we set are a reasonably priced place in Bengaluru, not far from our family and with an environment and clientele that appeals to us. Dining, medical emergency facilities and cultural activities are high priorities for us. Devanahali, near the airport, is a place we would like to settle in. Currently however there are no good senior citizen communities that have accommodation available in Devanahali.
For Deepa and me, being close to our daughter, son-in-law and grandson is a huge emotional requirement. We are active and live an independent life in a house just 4 km away from them. Moving even to Devanahali about 30 km away is not an easy decision at this stage. At this point of time, we don’t need a senior citizen community to give us a vibrant and active life. Our concern is only in the future when we may need the care and security that a senior citizen community provides.
We will keep our eyes and ears open for new facilities that may come up over the next couple of years when we will certainly make the investment. Our attempt will be to stay vibrant, active and engaged for as long as possible before we move into a home. After all, we are making every effort to stay vibrant at 80.
