20th October, 2016. BITS Pilani.
I’d gone along with my college’s contingent of 100 students to BITS Pilani’s ‘Oasis’: One of India’s biggest college festivals right up alongside IIT Bombay’s ‘Mood Indigo’. It was my first year of college.
We reached 3 days before our event, the Battle Of The Bands. The BOB was one of the most widely contested events of the fest with college AND professional bands from all over the country coming to perform, hoping to bag the cash prize of 20k and a recording deal for one song.
We had just one rule. No mischief before our event. Why? Because the marshals at the fest were sending back all the students from a particular college if even a single one of them was caught doing any sort of mischief. In the band, I was particularly asked to behave myself cause I had a bit of a reputation of being too ‘chill’ at the time.
Pilani had the weirdest timings for their events. Since they would hold classes for the students during the day, all the events of the fest would only begin after 9pm. Our event’s slot happened to be at 1am in the main auditorium. The picture above is from a free jam session one day before our event. It was non-competitive.
I had an embarrassing moment with my crush who was with me a few hours before the showdown. A friend of mine through no fault of his accidentally let the cat out the bag that I liked her and she got embarrassed and LITERALLY RAN AWAY.
So that was an awkward start to the hours before the competition. Anyway, we had a band dinner and headed towards the venue at 12:30am. Over there we were made aware that we were not even properly registered for the competition. Our names weren’t in the list. After a lot of pleading and also some exchange of ‘favours’ (yes, some kids from the college themselves were dirty), we finally got our names on the bill. One problem? We were given the last slot.
To be continued…
