One among the greats?
My opinion Sunny Gavaskar is the greatest Test batsman INDIA has ever produced.
We all know about his 10000+ runs and 34 hundreds. And many have scored more runs later on. But there are a few lesser known facts which put him right above everyone else.
His batting average in the 4th innings is 58.25. That’s higher than his career average of 51.12. Now, anyone who follows cricket closely would know that batting in the 4th innings means batting on day 4 or 5 pitch. Mostly (in his case) to save the match or win the match. The most challenging part of the Test match is this. And his average is simply phenomenal.
His batting average against the West Indies… who had a battery of genuine fast bowlers in the 70’s and 80’s like Wayne Danial, Andy Roberts, Sylvester Clark, Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Malcolm Marshall… in INDIA is 65.45 and in the Caribbean is the most impressive 70.20. Just shows how he was the master of handing some seriously fast bowlers.
And he scored all these runs without Helmet and without DRS and yeah even without NEUTRAL UMPIRES in an era when there was no restriction on the number of bouncers one can bowl.
