Afghani breakfasts are usually very simple with milk tea, green teas, some eggs, cheese, some almonds or walnuts and naam (Afghani flatbread).

Today’s morning was bright and sunny so as my breakfast. It had been months since I saw my dad a little easy and at peace. The situation back home has made him upset to the core. Afghanistan being in shambles bothers him dearly. He has lost a lot of his friends and family in the war in Afghanistan so I can’t express his grief in words ever but Alhamdulliah he is a man of faith and still has hopes for a free Afghanistan. I really wish he writes a book on Afghanistan and his experiences before war was thrown at us for power politics.

Anyway.
I prepared the breakfast today and spread the dastarkhan (tablecloth). Nothing I prepared was as beautiful and tasty as my mom’s homemade flat bread. The naam was fresh, warm and tasty. My mom recently switched to making naam at home due to increasing number of covid cases.

It’s an Afghan culture to sit down on the floor and eat, of course there is a carpet and dastarkhan to make sitting down easy but we don’t use table at all until we have some non- Afghan family and friends over. We were eating breakfast when I suddenly sneezed. ‘You sneeze like a sheep’ said my father and we all cracked. My father finds my sneezing fascinating and weird at the same time but I don’t mind as long as it brings smile to my dad’s face. I alway wonder where he has seen a sheep sneeze. Hahah but khair!

It doesn’t matter what I have on the table or dastarkhan, my parents being healthy and with me is all I want. My simple breakfast become extremely expensive when I have my parents around ♥️
