Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale is stuck in fairy tale fancies. This documentary falls in line if you cut the word Beyond. It’s a carefully crafted need-to-know basis show. Curated shots do the talking across.
Diana Kurien, aka Nayanthara, was an ambitious CA student when Malayalam film director Sathyan Anthikkad approached her with a dreamy offer. She made a grand entry in ‘Manassinakkare’ starring alongside popular actor Jayaram and veteran actress Sheela in 2003. Lady Luck blessed her again with a role opposite superstar Mohanlal in Vismayathumbathu. Director Fazil recalls her confidence at first sight made him think ‘This girl will make it’. But the film flopped. Nayanthara’s entry to Tamil Cinema made all the difference though. She soon rose to superstardom. Directors and big stars of the South Indian film industry banked on her presence in their films to turn them into high-grossers. Nayan believes the pure love of fans made her movies successful. The chosen film folks speak in Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale remain on the surface while sharing their working chemistry and adoration for her superstardom. I exclude Sathyan Anthikkad from this tribe.
I yearned for some fresh things kept from the media. You get enough motivational speaker tone when Nayan talks of her downfalls. She flaunts her altruistic innocence responding to trolls in the past about her bikini appearance in Billa. She conveniently masks her willingness, a bold choice in a free country. Actors are bound to obey directors after signing the contract only.
Nayan is in full josh while sharing her fairy tale love story with Vignesh Shivan. Both appreciate each other a lottt and vigorously team up to build a perfect couple and family image for the world.
What made Nayanthara a lady superstar in the southern film zone of India is a million-dollar question. Apart from its apparent factors, there should be some inspiring lessons only Nayanthara can reveal. Many of our female leads are thriving to get there as the divide and disparity still prevail. I doubt it is a well-kept trade secret.
Nayanthara: BTFT is tightly fenced. You see prepped shots seldom cross line.
