NGOs Collects 378kg E-waste, Raises Awareness for Correct Disposal
A Mumbai-based NGO, Stree Mukti Sanghatana (SMS), has collected 378 kg of electronic waste from various housing societies and offices in the city. The NGO aims to raise awareness about the correct disposal of e-waste and its environmental impact.
E-waste refers to discarded electronic devices such as computers, mobile phones, TVs, refrigerators, etc. that contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, etc. These materials can leach into the soil and water and cause health problems for humans and animals.
SMS has been conducting workshops and campaigns to educate people about the importance of segregating e-waste from other waste and handing it over to authorized recyclers. The NGO has also partnered with a certified e-waste management company, EcoCentric Management Pvt Ltd, to collect and recycle the e-waste.
According to SMS, most people are unaware of the proper way to dispose of e-waste and often dump it in landfills or sell it to scrap dealers who use unsafe methods to extract metals from it. This not only harms the environment but also wastes valuable resources that can be recovered and reused.
SMS hopes that by collecting and recycling e-waste, they can contribute to the circular economy and reduce the carbon footprint of the city. They also plan to expand their initiative to other parts of Maharashtra and India. They urge people to join their movement and support their cause by donating their e-waste to them.
