In a significant development, the administration of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar has taken disciplinary action against those students who were allegedly involved in the assault of a junior-year student on March 31 of this year.
It may be mentioned here that an FIR was filed at the Ghoongoor Police outpost by the victim's parents.
Moreover, the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students' Association (ACKHSA) had given the NIT administration until April 11 to take action against the accused students.
In addition, the NIT administration informed that shortly after the incident was reported, a committee led by the Dean of Students' Welfare was formed to investigate the incident, as per reports.
In an order issued on Tuesday, April 18, the Institute's Dean of Students Welfare stated that five students had been punished with immediate academic suspension for the current semester, exclusion from the dormitory and issuing warning letters.
Five more students have been barred from dormitories for the current semester, and they will receive warning letters. In addition, one student was banned from the dormitory for one month, and a warning letter was issued, the media stated.
"As per the warning letter all the above students are required to submit an undertaking that they will not involve themselves in any indisciplinary activities during their remaining period of stay at NIT Silchar on a non-judicial stamp paper of ₹100/- in presence of a Notary Public within 15 days of publication of this notification. Otherwise, appropriate disciplinary action(s) including expulsion from the Institute may be imposed. Moreover, all the above mentioned students are debarred from T&P coordinatorship, Gymkhana membership, and all other management roles in institutional activities during their remaining period of stay at NIT Silchar. Parents/guardians of all the above mentioned students have been intimated about the incident," the order stated.
On the other hand, Cachar Police Superintendent Numal Mahatta stated that an investigation based on the FIR is underway.
