The relationship between Canada and India has hit it's rock bottom now with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau making credible allegations that the Indian government may have had links to the assassination in Canada of a pro-Khalistani terrorist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Amid the escalating tensions, and political of tit for tat, now Trudeau in fresh statements said Canada was not trying to “provoke” India by alleging a “potential link” between "agents of the Indian government" and the killing of Sikh terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijaar.
Canada has been one of the favoured hubs of expat Sikhs, where extremism has mushroomed along the margins and made headlines over the last few months, hitting bilateral ties. Trade talks with Canada have been derailed.
"The government of India needs to take this matter with the utmost seriousness. We are doing that, we are not looking to provoke or escalate," Trudeau was quoted as saying by Reuters.
The Canadian Prime Minister’s remark came after his speech in Parliament created a furor.
India has rejected Mr Trudeau's claims. "Allegations of the Government of India's involvement in any act of violence in Canada are absurd and motivated," the foreign ministry has said. "Similar allegations were made by the Canadian Prime Minister to our Prime Minister, and were completely rejected," it said.
The matter escalated and over the last two days, Canada and India each expelled a senior diplomat of the other country. Yesterday, the un-named Canadian diplomat was asked to leave India within five days.
