West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding immediate replacement of Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to enable "good governance " in the state.
In the letter, Banerjee alleged that the Governor has been raking up an "exaggerated version" of violence in West Bengal since the assembly elections.
"The whole exercise is to project a highly inflated version of the law and order situation in West Bengal, overlooking the fact that the incidents happened when the control of administration was not in our hands," she said.
The tussle between the Governor and Banerjee has escalated after the assembly elections in which the Trinamool Congress humiliated the BJP registering a landslide victory.
The Governor has been visiting different areas affected by the post-poll violence despite the state government urging him to desist from doing so.
The Trinamool Congress has alleged that Dhankhar is violating the constitutional provisions by ignoring the advice of the state government.
Banerjee too had written to Dhankhar claiming that his visits would be "violative of the long-standing norms as evolved over several decades" and urged him to desist from "abrupt decisions" with regards to field visits that followed a call from the Prime Minister to the Governor.
Banerjee further said in the letter that the situation is now under full control and the administration is busy fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.
She also said that Dhankhar was "crossing all limits" by raising the law and order issue during the swearing-in ceremony and tweeting about it in public domain.
The Chief Minister claimed that the Governor is trying to destabilise the functioning of the government at the time when the need of the hour was focussed efforts to control the Covid situation.
The Trinamool Congress is also likely to bring in a resolution in the legislative assembly demanding the removal of the Governor.
The ruling party has alleged that the Governor is acting at the behest of the central government given that the BJP has not been able to digest the drubbing in the elections despite running an aggressive campaign that saw numerous rallies by the Prime Minister and Home Minister Amit Shah.
