Ode to the west wind is one of the wonderfully written poem by PB Shelly, in this poem, he is treating it as a force of death and decay. Shelly belonged to a romantic age. He extraordinarily welcomes wind and treats it as a human being, the poet believes that death and decay are necessary for transformation and regeneration. Here the wind is the source of rejuvenation and rebirth
The poet recalls the lovely relationship with the west wind in his youth. He desires to be a dead leaf so that the west wind would carry him thereby feeling its strength. In the last few lines of the poem, he appeals to the west wind to turn him into a lyre, by this way his words can be scattered all over the world like a dead leaf for everyone through the wind. He concludes by asking the question that if winter will arrive, the spring will not be far behind. He states a metaphor about birth and death, it means that death and decay do not mean the end but rebirth. The poem shows us the power of the wind which brings a change in the natural world. similarly, the poet wishes to reform society. the poem has underlying themes of optimism and hope for a better future. Shelly himself was a revolutionary poet and has to face make problems due to his ideologies and he was thrown out of his college. in my point of view, this poem gives an entirely different experience and has a close read to it, which gives you multiple interpretations.
