Olive Ridley sea turtles have started arriving at the Odisha, India, coast for annual mass nesting. Gahirmatha, a place in the Kendrapada district of Odisha, is situated 150 kilometers from the state capital Bhubaneswar. Gahirmatha is the world's largest mass nesting place where these endangered species come annually. The olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), also known commonly as the Pacific ridley sea turtle, is a species of turtle in the family Cheloniidae.
The principal cause of the worldwide decline of the olive ridley sea turtle was the long-term collection of eggs and the mass killing of adult females on nesting beaches.
These turtles are best known for their unique synchronized mass nestings called arribadas, where thousands of females come together on the same beach to lay eggs.
The Olive ridley turtles are the smallest and most abundant of all sea turtles found in the world, inhabiting warm waters of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans.
