The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers’ meeting is scheduled in Pakistan in two days. Pakistan says the summit will effectively bridge the communication gap between the Taliban and the world.

“The OIC meeting will be a step towards finding a solution to the humanitarian crisis in the country, and by hosting the summit, Pakistan wants to play a positive role in bridging the gap between the world and the Taliban,” said Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in a news conference in Islamabad on Thursday, December 16.

Moreover, the meeting will take place on December 19 and will be attended by a delegation from the Taliban led by Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi.

According to the Pakistani Foreign Minister, in addition to the foreign ministers of the OIC, representatives of the United States, China, Russia, and some European countries will also attend the meeting.

“If the situation in this meeting goes well, the whole region will benefit. However, if things went wrong in this meeting, all the achievements would be lost,” said Qureshi.

However, he added that Pakistan wants the Taliban to listen to the international community’s concerns about human rights.

Qureshi stressed that Pakistan is not a spokesman for the Taliban but only wants to bring stakeholders to the OIC platform to reach out directly to their views.

Furthermore, Qureshi added that Pakistan’s focus is on improving the lives of the Afghan people, who have endured years of war and violence.

“We do not limit ourselves to any particular faction or group in Afghanistan,” he said.

On the other hand, the Pakistani Foreign Minister rejected the idea that holding an OIC conference on Afghanistan is a step towards recognizing the Taliban. On the contrary, this is a rare opportunity for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the Taliban earlier welcomed the meeting. Before the meeting, however, they called on Islamic countries to support and recognize the Taliban interim government.
