Arsenal travel to Anfield today to face Liverpool which could well be a defining game in their season. This is the first of three key away games.
By all accounts, Arsenal should be confident. They have been by far the best performing away side in the Premier League this season, dropping points just three times from 14 games. Liverpool on the other hand, are enduring a torrid season. They sit eighth in the table and their hopes of retaining Champions League football are all but gone.
However, despite Liverpool's poor form, it is their away form that has mainly suffered. At Anfield, they have won nine of their 13 games including wins over Manchester City and Newcastle, as well as a 7-0 battering of Manchester United. Anfield has always been viewed as an away team's nightmare and that hasn't changed much this season. It is a mental block that Arsenal must overcome.
Arsenal's last win at Anfield came in 2012, when Mikel Arteta was starting in midfield. Goals came from Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla that day, but it hasn't been a happy hunting ground for Arsenal since. The Gunners have been on the end of four or five goal score-lines on numerous occasions.
Whether it is the atmosphere or the opposition, Arsenal haven't enjoyed going to Anfield in recent years. However, this Arsenal team has shown signs this season, that many before them have failed to do so.
Before this season, Arsenal hadn't registered a league win away at Tottenham since 2014. This season, they killed the atmosphere, controlled the game and came away with the three points. They must do something similar today.
Against other Liverpool teams, Arsenal have struggled to cope with the suffocating press associated with Jurgen Klopp teams. All it would take would be one mistake and the floodgates would often be forced open.
This Liverpool team don't press the same way, they may not even want to press Arsenal because Arsenal no longer have a defence afraid of the ball. They have and will pass around you if you get too close.
Arsenal must dominate, if they do so, they will break Liverpool down.
